Lecture Overview:  Publications over the last decade reveal multiple purposes and favorable outcomes when tissue adhesives (TA) are used with both peripheral and central VADs.  The evidence suggests positive results in increased dwell times, reduction in exit site bleeding and unscheduled dressing changes.  Furthermore, TA has bactericidal properties sealing the puncture site and preventing inward migration of bacteria.

This presentation will review the evidence and describe the benefits of  tissue adhesives to improve vascular access outcomes.

Lecture Objectives:

  • Review vascular access device complications.
  • Define the components and characteristics of tissue adhesives.
  • Describe the purposes of tissue adhesives when used with VADs.
  • Analyze clinical outcomes of tissue adhesives used with VADs.
