Announcement for 2018 Board of Directors

It is with great pleasure to inform you that the slate of candidates for the 2018 AVA Board of Directors recommended by the AVA Board Development Committee (BDC) has been accepted by the membership. The BDC is proud of the work we have done to provide a wide range of experience to provide value and help drive AVA forward. Previously elected Andrea Owens, MSNEd, RN, CRNI, VA-BC assumes the role of President. Ken Symington, MD, VA-BC steps into the President-Elect position, and Russ Nassof, JD assumes the role of Treasurer. Jennifer McCord, MSN, RN, PCCN, CCRN, CCNS, VA-BC remains as Secretary for another year. New candidates added this year represent stakeholders in vascular access who may not be responsible for the placement of lines but are key advocates who support our mission.

As we all know, partners with the Infection Prevention Specialist are critical to reducing infection risks associated with the devices the vascular access specialist inserts. Christie Chapman, RN, BSN, CIC-IPCE III is a Registered Nurse with over 7 years of experience as an infection preventionist. She is passionate about improving patient care and is excited to help drive the AVA Strategic Plan to that end.

Samantha Crandall, MSN, RN, CPHQ, CPPS has been involved in patient safety and process improvement for the last several years at a major healthcare center in California. She also has an interest in improving the care for patients who need vascular access devices.

Lorelle Wuerz, PhD, MSN, BS, BA, RN, VA-BC, a devoted vascular access specialist for over a decade, brings her advanced practice and extensive leadership experience to the board.

A critical patient care environment where many types of long-term vascular access devices are seen is the alternate site area. Gwendolyn Coney, MSN, RN, CRNI, VA-BC brings her years of experience in home infusion and long-term care, an area we have not had represented in the past.

Effective this year, the BDC has recommended that PediSig assign a candidate to serve on the AVA Board of Directors. That responsibility falls upon Stephanie Pitts, MSN, RN, CPN, VA-BC in 2018. Each year we will ask a new representative from this special interest group to represent this very important patient population.

Another new member to the AVA board is Amy Stone, RN, BSN, CRNI, IgCN, VA-BC, CMRN, a longtime AVA member who brings special attention to the oncology specialty.

We are also very excited to welcome back Anita Piano, MSN, RN to the board for another year. She, along with incoming President-Elect Ken Symington, represent Interventional Radiology, a key practice setting where devices are inserted.

Last, but not least, we will have a very impressive representative for our patients. Madalyn A. George-Thiemann, MS, RN, CNS serves as the patient advocate on the AVA board. Many of you may remember Madalyn from our keynote presentation last year along with her incredible son, Roy George. Madalyn is currently responsible for coordinating and delivering care to children with life-threatening and/or life-limiting conditions in the home setting, including children at end of life.

Please join the BDC in welcoming all the new members to the board and in recognizing their commitment to AVA’s growth and development. New member terms will begin in January 2018. More information about each board member will be available on the website at that time.
