Information for Authors
The Journal of the Association for Vascular Access (JAVA) welcomes scholarly original articles on clinical practice, education and research related to vascular access including articles on vascular access manufacturing and technology, and vascular access care and maintenance issues in hospitals, home settings, hospice, and alternative care facilities. Articles must not be previously published or under consideration by another journal at the time of submission. JAVA is a multidisciplinary, international journal and invites submissions from authors in all relevant disciplines and settings.

Current topics of interest to the journal include: evidence-based practice, new initiatives, outcomes research, patient/family satisfaction, international and multidisciplinary issues, use of devices, financial implications of devices, and issues confronted in clinical practice.
Manuscripts published in JAVA become the sole property of the Association for Vascular Access (AVA).
JAVA is a peer-reviewed journal. Editorial revisions may be made to improve presentation without altering meaning. Written permission from the original author and publisher is required when employing material previously published in any submitted manuscript. Written permission is required for use of photographs of identifiable individuals.
Submission Process
As of May 15, 2010 the Journal of the Association for Vascular Access will use a web-based, online submission and review system. (Note that manuscripts submitted before May 15, 2010 will continue to be processed in the previous system). Submit original manuscripts at http://www.editorialmanager.com/JAVA/. The web site will guide you step by step through the electronic submission process. Note that original source files, not PDF files are required. Correspondence and editorial inquiries should be addressed to . Once the submission files are uploaded the system automatically generates an electronic (PDF) proof, which is used for reviewing. All correspondence, including the Managing Editor’s decision and request for revisions, will be by e-mail.
Proofs of the final manuscript will be sent to the principal author for approval. No significant changes will be accepted at that time. A signed contract with transfer copyright of the published article to the Association of Vascular Access is required prior to final publication (click to download). Publication dates depend on numerous factors, including the timeliness of the article and space availability in the journal. It is the responsibility of the principal author to maintain current contact information with the editorial staff. Manuscripts can be withdrawn any time prior to publication, provided that the manuscript is not in press, by notifying the editorial staff.
Guidelines for Authors
All Papers and Manuscripts
All manuscripts should be in MS Word format and conform to word length specifications. Papers must adhere to the style and format described in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association: Sixth Edition (2010). All content, including tables should have one inch margins on all four sides of 8.5 x 11 inch paper, be double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12 pt font. Tables, illustrations and references should be in separate files from the manuscript file.
Scholarly Papers, Literature Reviews and Research Manuscripts
The manuscript should include a title page, an abstract, the content, with figures and/or tables as applicable, figure legends, and references. The maximum length is 35 pages and a maximum of 6000 words, including references, tables, photographs, and figures. The Abstract and Title page are not included in this word count. The Abstract has a maximum of 250 words. Research manuscripts should include the following headings as appropriate: Background or Introduction, Review of Literature, Purpose, Definition of Terms, Variables, Methodology (including research questions/hypotheses or study aims, conceptual framework (if applicable) sampling, instrumentation (if appropriate), reliability and validity, data analysis, protection of human or animal subjects), Results, Conclusions, Limitations, Recommendations for Practice, and References in APA format. Qualitative studies are also encouraged and should adhere to the above research guidelines as appropriate. Non-research manuscripts should use a format appropriate for the content and adhere to all other specifications. Research articles require Internal Review Board (IRB) approval to be considered for publication.
Concept, Issue, Education (including teaching) and White Papers
These papers have no specific format for the content. They have a limit of 3000 words, unless otherwise authorized by the Editor, and must adhere to the requirements for the submission of all manuscripts. Authors are encouraged to provide a Background, Literature Review, Content, Implications for Practice, and References.
Manufacturing/Industry and Vascular Access Device Papers
These papers provide information on new products and device use, as well as technological information that is appropriate for practitioners and other manufacturers and industry. They must adhere to the requirements for the submission of all manuscripts and have a maximum limit of 3000 words.
News Items/Papers and Opinion Papers
News items or papers should explain the topic in sufficient detail to be clear to the reader and are limited to 1000 words. No Abstract is required.
International Papers
International papers may be appropriate for any section of the journal and should conform to the format for that section and the type of paper or manuscript being submitted. International papers should be in US English. Authors for whom English is a second language should consider having their manuscripts edited by an English speaking person before submission.
Abstracts and Previously Published Works
Written permission from the primary source and a copy of the original published manuscript are required. Abstracts should have a maximum of 500 words. For previously published works other than Abstracts, an inquiry should be directed to the Editor.
Submission Format
- Title page should include the manuscript title, names of all authors in rank order with credentials, professional positions, affiliation, city and state, and specific contact information for the corresponding author, including preferred mailing address, daytime phone number, fax number, e-mail address, and funding sources and acknowledgments as applicable. The word count for the Abstract and the paper, excluding the Title page should appear on the Title page.
- Abstract should include manuscript title, but not the author's name. The Abstract for scholarly papers, literature reviews and research manuscripts should be limited to 250 words and describe the essential points of the manuscript: Aim/Purpose, Background/Introduction, Review of Relevant Literature, Methods, Results, Conclusions, Implications for Practice and three keywords. Headings should be bold-faced. Abstracts for concept, issue, education (including teaching), White Papers and opinion papers should include the Purpose, Review of Relevant Literature, Discussion, Implications for Clinical Practice, and three keywords.
- Content: The use of jargon and unfamiliar abbreviations is discouraged. The use of headings and subheadings to organize the text is encouraged. The use of generic drug names and product descriptions should be used whenever possible. If the brand name is required to aid the readers’ understanding, the manufacturer’s name and city and state location are to be provided in parentheses within the text.
- References: Style shall conform to The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association: Sixth Edition (2010). Washington, D.C.: American Psychological Association. (Visit www.apastyle.org for assistance.) References should be published papers or books. References should be cited within the text with author(s) and date in parentheses unless author(s) are used as a part of a sentence. Direct quotes in the text should include page numbers. Written personal communications are cited in parentheses within the text. Authors are responsible for validating the accuracy of references and for making sure that all websites used are current and working in original and revised manuscripts.

For electronic sources that do not provide page numbers, use the paragraph number, if available, preceded by the paragraph symbol or the abbreviation para. If neither paragraph nor page numbers are visible, cite the heading and the number of the paragraph following it, to direct the reader to the location of the material
Online Scholarly Journal:
Online materials can potentially change URL's, APA recommends providing a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), when it is available, as opposed to the URL.

Online scholarly journal articles without a DOI require a URL.
• Figures/Tables: Figures and/or tables should be labeled appropriately and each submitted on a separate page in a separate file. See APA Manual for formatting style.
• Photographs, illustrations and images should be provided as digital high-resolution (300 dpi) JPEG or TIFF files. Do not place them in other files, such as Microsoft Word. Slides and poor resolution photographs, illustrations or images will not be accepted. Note that permission has been granted for use, noting by whom and where for each photograph, illustration and image (click here for photo consent). Use of photographs, illustrations or images that are not accompanied by full permission and/or include identifiers (examples: name badges, patient name on x-ray) will not be used.
