Reviewing Approaches to Blood Collection
Blood draws are one of the most ubiquitous medical procedures performed in hospitals every day. And
while their results inform 70% of all clinical decisions, there has been little innovation to the procedure in
decades. The trauma, risk and waste created by the nearly 450M blood draws that occur in the US every
year, has been overlooked. The current state of blood draws allows for 30 percent of adults and over 40
percent of children to undergo multiple stick attempts. This not only negatively impacts patient experience
but also leads to vessel depletion, vein injury and phlebitis.

Talk Objectives:
  • Discuss sub-optimal blood collection practices
  • ldentify hurdles that prevent peripheral lV blood collections from existing PlVs
  • Research venous anatomy's role in blood collection
