Debra is a member of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Society.

Program Description:

Prevention of infection, preservation of vascular access and promotion of patient comfort are key outcomes of care during infusion therapy.  Because intact, healthy skin provides the body’s first line of defense, nurses providing infusion therapy need to have an understanding of skin and the mechanisms by which it can be disrupted.  In this presentation, the participant will learn about normal skin structure and function, various types of Medical Adhesive-related Skin Injury (MARSI) as well as practical strategies for prevention and management of skin damage at vascular access sites.

Objectives:

1)     Describe the significance of skin damage at vascular access sites

2)     Explain the mechanism of injury for at least 2 types of MARSI

3)     Describe four key steps for MARSI prevention
