The History and Science of Silver in Managing Infections in the Vascular Access Specialty Presented by: Amanda Budak, RN, CBN, PhD

Summary: Silver has been used as an antimicrobial for centuries.  This presentation will provide a brief background on the history of silver and review the mechanisms of action of silver in preventing infections.  A focus will be made on silver vascular access advanced dressings.  

 Objectives:

       Discuss the history of Silver in managing infection

       Discuss the role of silver in eliminating bacteria

       Explain how silver ions kill microorganisms

       Discuss alternatives to CHG
