May 1, 2020 – Today the Association for Vascular Access (AVA) Foundation Board of Directors announced the appointment of Marcia Ryder, PhD, MS, RN, and Amy Bardin-Spencer, EdD(c), MS, RRT, VA-BC™ to President and President-Elect.

Their selections come as a result of a unanimous vote by the AVA Foundation Board of Directors, positioning the Foundation with dynamic new leadership for the foreseeable future.

“I am honored to accept the position of AVA Foundation President,” Ryder said. “My agenda for the organization is both ambitious and forthright, and I look forward to working with Amy and the rest of the Foundation’s leadership to move its mission forward by promoting novel research strategies centered on keeping patients safe.”

Ryder brings nearly 50 years of nursing experience to the office of AVA Foundation President, including the last 30 entrenched in medical biofilm research. The 2017 recipient of the Suzanne LaVere Herbst Award for Excellence in Vascular Access, Ryder’s passion for optimizing patient safety led her to start her own company focused on medical biofilm research.

“I appreciate the opportunity and look forward to working with Marcia Ryder and the Foundation,” Bardin-Spencer said. “I accept the position of President-Elect as this is a pivotal responsibility in both commitment but also growth and development of the organization. Our work will take time and I look forward to the journey.”

Bardin-Spencer has focused her healthcare career on respiratory therapy and vascular access. She currently serves as the clinical director for global vascular access initiatives at a major medical device company. The 2016 recipient of the Herbst Award, and like Ryder, Bardin-Spencer is a sought-after speaker and presenter aimed at sharing her knowledge and experiences with vascular access teams.

“We are excited to have them join the Foundation and look forward to their leadership in moving the organization forward,” said Tonya Heim, Foundation Liaison for the AVA Board of Directors.

The AVA Foundation is dedicated to saving lives through vascular access innovation, research and education. It serves as clinicians interested in vascular access, students of the healthcare professions and vascular access patients and their families. It is the nonprofit 501(c)(3) arm of the Association for Vascular Access, which advances the vascular access specialty and defines its standards through evidence-based interventions to enhance healthcare and patient outcomes.

The Foundation funds projects like miniMAGIC, a novel algorithm that produces evidence-based recommendations for when a particular vascular access device is appropriate for use in a pediatric setting.

With the support and generosity of AVA membership and its industry partners, initiatives like miniMAGIC represent the projects Ryder, Bardin-Spencer and the Foundation Board of Directors will critically review. They will oversee future collaborations aimed at providing healthcare professionals with evidence and expert-based criteria to improve patient outcomes.
